Unconditional
I have an open face and a kindness in my eyes.
When people get how old I am there's always some surprise.
I feel like I'm thirty three or maybe thirty five,
And I've cultivated life around me so that I can thrive.

And though I'm very open, I am often hard to read.
When you meet me I am not the tree.  I am the seed.
Plant me and I'll put down roots.  Water me; I'll grow.
And I will do the same for you.  It's how the stories go:

All the stories start with seeds and end up like the trees.
So don't you try to rush me.  Do it slowly if you please.
And when you do my roots will grow, my leaves and branches too,
And when the Sun is really bright I'll be the shade for you.

This was a poetic portrait written for a visitor to my Fig2  solo exhibition at the ICA in January 2015.
